Despite inclement weather, we were able to place over 40 oyster blocks in the sanctuary site Saturday. Wooden pilings will be placed this Fall.
September is late in the oyster spawning season. The blocks will be examined in 1-2 months to look for evidence of oyster embryo ("spat") settlement on the blocks. We want to determine how late in the season planting blocks will result in a significant number of spat sets.
We plan to invite the public to come help complete the sanctuary in April/May 2018. Meanwhile we will focus on fund-raising, promotion, and preparing applications for additional sites.
